Purpose: This systematic review is to critically appraise the literature on factors affecting driving and motor vehicle transportation experiences of people with autism spectrum disorders ASD and to provide insight into future directions for research. Methods: Systematic searches of eight databases identified 22 studies meeting our inclusion criteria. These studies were analysed in terms of the characteristics of the participants, methodology, results of the study and quality of the evidence. Conclusion: Our findings highlight several gaps in the research and an urgent need for further transportation-related training and supports for people with ASD.

The autism spectrum encompasses a range of neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism and Asperger syndrome , generally known as autism spectrum disorders ASD. Individuals on the autism spectrum typically experience difficulties with social communication and interaction and may also exhibit restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. Symptoms are typically recognized between one and two years of age in boys. It is also common for diagnosis to be received as an adolescent or as an adult.
Causes of autism
Introduction: Autism spectrum disorders ASD comprise typical or infantile autism Kanner syndrome , Asperger's disorder and atypical autism or pervasive developmental disorder - not otherwise specified. The syndrome is characterized by deficits in 1 verbal and nonverbal communication, 2 reciprocal social interaction and 3 repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests and activities. Early behavioural interventions are based on learning theory and behaviour therapy.
Molecular Autism volume 12 , Article number: 11 Cite this article. Metrics details. There is a strong research imperative to investigate effective treatment options for adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorder ASD. Elevated social anxiety, difficulties with social functioning and poor mental health have all been identified as core treatment targets for this group. While theoretical models posit a strong bidirectionality between social anxiety and ASD social functioning deficits, few interventions have targeted both domains concurrently.
