As the pandemic has evolved, more workers are finding their homes have become permanent corporate real estate with many benefits for corporations and businesses that are discovering the value of a distributed working model. We found that almost all of the available studies focused on how remote work affected business, while few focused on workers, especially as it relates to the social and psychological impact of jobs that lose the immediacy of person-to-person contact. Thankfully, some organizations took notice during the pandemic and sought answers from the workforce. Surveys of remote workers early in the pandemic show that the burnout started almost immediately after stay at home orders were issued. To make matters worse, in the crush of economic and operational changes that have rained down over the past year, few employers have devoted much thought to questions of how to engage and support workforces that may be experiencing loneliness, burnout, fatigue and anxiety. Only half of respondents of one survey of workers with flexible work options felt they had the emotional support they needed to manage stress during work.

As remote work becomes the new norm, employees and organizations have an opportunity to create a healthier work experience. Before the pandemic, the majority of Americans reported work-life balance as a problem, and many felt their employers were not doing enough to address this issue. Even if organizations offer work-life initiatives, workers often fear the stigma of taking advantage of family-friendly policies. In addition, researchers have diagnosed a larger problem: a culture of overwork. If change is to happen, expectations around face time and schedules must evolve, and COVID provides the impetus towards more flexible options.

This essay was an email note written in response to a friend who asked me to reflect on the role of spirtuality in the workplace for a project he was working on. At the time I wrote this, I had been telecommuting to my job at Apple in California from my home in Minneapolis for two to three years. I've had the theme of work and spirit lurking about the edges of my thoughts all day.
