Chemistry and Biochemistry, PhD < George Mason University
The preparation and defense of an original research proposal serves as the second portion of the preliminary examination. For this portion, there exists a Proposal Evaluation Committee PEC to consist of the student's entire graduate committee except for the member from outside the department. The department chair, if serving on the graduate committee as an ex-officio member, will be a non-voting member of this PEC. Initial work on the proposal should be initiated when the student begins taking cumulative examinations, as the first draft of the written proposal see below must be submitted to the PEC before the end of the student's fifth semester. Failure to submit the draft by the end of the fifth semester will result in discontinuation of assistantship support until the requirement is fulfilled.
PhD in Chemistry/Biochemistry
PhD Biochemistry is a research-based course which studies living organisms on a molecular level and involves a deep study of biomolecules. This advanced degree incorporates various fields of biological sciences such as genetics, forensics, medicine, plant science, and microbiology. It comprises several seminars, project works, and research in scientific laboratories. It takes a minimum of three years to complete the PhD Biochemistry course, but can be stretched upto 5 years, depending on the duration of research.
As a PhD student, you will gain broad knowledge in the field of biochemistry, as well as expert guidance in biotechnology and environmental chemistry. Classes are typically small, affording superb opportunities for interaction with the faculty and access to state-of-the art equipment and computational resources. Our program provides individualized attention and unique research opportunities. This full-time program takes approximately five years to complete. We award a limited number of graduate assistantships and tuition credit to qualified graduate students each year.
