The aim of the doctoral candidates is to complete their degree in four years of full-time study, during which they complete the required doctoral studies and write a doctoral dissertation to be examined. For this goal to be feasible, the workload of the degree shall be proportionate to the objective duration of studies. This shall be taken into account in the course of the supervision of the doctoral candidate. The doctoral degree, including a doctoral dissertation, should be completed in four years of full-time study. This is the goal of Aalto University.

This article provides guidance for students on how to have a fruitful supervisory relationship. Writing a dissertation can be stressful; one of the keys to success is for students to have a positive, fruitful relationship with their dissertation supervisor, whose guidance can be a great asset.
In part fulfilment of the requirements for the award of a Masters, students within the School of Business are expected to undertake independent research and are allocated a supervisor to guide them in terms of process and requirements. The supervisor is not expected to be a subject matter expert but should have experience of dissertation supervision at Level 9 and be in a position to guide the student on accessing appropriate literature, dissertation structure, methodological choices, data collection and analysis. The supervisor will be required to meet with the student at least five times over the course of their dissertation which extends to approximately 6 months. The majority of Masters level students are allocated their supervisors by March with a dissertation submission date in mid-August. Supervisors must therefore be available to the students therefore over the course of the summer months however this can be at pre-arranged times.
